A long time ago in a Forge Hub far, far away there existed a contest. It was a contest to rule all other contests; forged in the fires of Mount Doom itself. A contest...okay, enough with the obligatory movie references it simply was just a damn good contest. This however, is not that contest. Well, it sort of is. It's close enough to do a cheesy rip of the name. Just read on.
Where ya goin' with this?
Well, my interested and eager young friend, the purpose behind Foreign Treasures is, as with Forgotten Treasures, to remake maps. The original being best known for its focus on Halo maps. This time though, things are a little different. This day the Halo maps are outlawed, and it's all those second rate, two-bit shooters you get to bring maps back. Just kidding, those are great shooters..but you do get to bring maps from them!
Okay cool, but what is a "remake"?
Oh, getting tricky here huh? It just so happens that a remake would entail a close to original recreation of already existing content. That means remaking Gridlock from Gears of War needs to look as close as possible to Gridlock. However, being that the power of Forge is limited and the scope of certain FPS maps is large, you are allowed some creative freedoms. Do this well, and score bonus points. Fail, and lose points or possibly have your entry so far off of a remake you are disqualified.
Ya, that's nice but...what's in it for me?
Of course, of course...we would never expect you to do something for nothing. Quite the contrary actually as this contest has the best rewards of any forge contest Forge Hub has hosted in the past. Along with the accustomed Feature and custom title, the winner of Foreign Treasures will receive a giant pile of beans! Oh my gosh wow and they're even in a bag too! That's right folks, the winners of this contest will take home a fancy, new bean bag chair, courtesy of Sumo Lounge. Girl not included.
This prize, a Sumo Lounge Omni Bean Bag Chair is valued at a price equivalent to $150 USD. Sumo Lounge Bean Bags are some of the best on the market with quality and comfort to outmatch the competition. These lightweight, supersized bags can be contorted into over 10 different positions and come in 10 unique colors. Sumo bags are made out of a rip-proof nylon and come with top quality Sumo beans. If you're in the market for a new gamer chair or even a piece of bean furniture for your living room, make sure to check out Sumo Lounge.
Alright, I'm in. Tell me what to do.
Now we come to the most important part of the contest, the rules. This contest is designed to be fun and open for everyone, but is still a competitive map making competition. Maps must be playable and will be judged heavily on gameplay, along with aesthetic accuracy and a spice of creativity.
Rules:
-All maps must be created on either Sandbox or Foundry to better ensure quality entries.
-The deadline for entries is June 24th, 2010 11:59 EST JULY 1ST, 2010.
-Maps must be created after May 29th, 2010
-Maps are to be submitted under the appropriate format in the submission thread.
-Budget Glitching, as well as all other standard glitches are allowed
-Co-Forging with one (1) additional person is allowed, however it is up to you to decide who is awarded the prize. It is not recommended that you co-forge.
-Multiple entries are permitted
-Maps must be remade from an existing map in one of the following games, or corresponding DLC
Gears of War
Gears of War 2
Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare
Call of Duty: World at War
Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2
Perfect Dark
Goldeneye
Rainbow Six Vegas
Rainbow Six Vegas 2
Unreal Tournament III
Killzone 2
Quake Live
Left for Dead
Left for Dead 2
Counter Strike: Source
Remake Guidelines:
-Maps are being played in Halo 3 so make sure they play the standard Halo 3 gametypes (Slayer, Flag, and either King or Oddball).
-Creativity points will be awarded for those who have a good weapon set to match the weapons already existing on a map (using a laser in place of torque bow, etc).
-You are allowed three (3) custom gametypes with mock settings of the game from which your remake was chosen. It is recommended that you do your best to create a gametype along with your entry. As many games have different playstyles than Halo, some maps may not translate well. It is important to decide on which maps you think will transfer to Halo the best, as well as which games you think you may be able to best recreate with custom settings.
Angryface, where is -insert game here-?!
There are plenty of games that we too would love to add to this list, however the above is the best representation of shooter based games within which we have the ability to test and recognize maps. Certain PC games have over the years acquired much custom content that is often embedded into the games history from that point forward, making it very hard to determine which maps are truly apart of those games. Due to these factors, we have had to limit the list to the widest variety of games that we're in reasonable bounds for us.
Quake Live?
Quake Live is an online based multiplayer game modeled after the multiplayer aspects of previous Quake games, especially Quake III. Quake live offers over 50 online arenas against other players, as well as bot training matches. Players can both spectate matches with a flying camera (great for studying maps to forge), as well as pre-match warm ups if one just likes to run around and learn the maps. Quake Live is definitely one of the best options for this contest, as Quake offers some of the coolest maps and coolest game play.
Alrighty, we're off to work!
And rightfully you should be, c'mon man there be beans to win! We hope to see a good turn out with this contest. Forgotten Treasures was one of, if not the most successful forging contest of Forge Hub history and it was a whole lot of fun. So bring us your best guys, and we'll give you something to rest your ass on after all your hard work.
