Double-Edge has undergone one of the strongest improvement arcs in the entire contest. Early versions featured complex activation switches and base-blocking shield mechanics that created unintended confusion and slowed the pace of combat. Their removal — along with several targeted technical fixes — has dramatically elevated the clarity, pacing, and competitive readability of the map. What remains is a visually strong, symmetrical Forerunner playspace with solid macro flow, well-considered weapon changes, and improved sandbox tuning. However, the map’s largest remaining challenge is player orientation: the long, linear Forerunner tunnels connecting both bases create a continuous visual identity that makes it difficult to distinguish sides, judge direction, or recognize when players have crossed the map’s midpoint. Addressing this single issue would meaningfully improve both the learning curve and moment-to-moment gameplay readability.

Gameplay:

The biggest gameplay issue — and the one raised most consistently by all test groups — is player awareness. The long, uninterrupted base-to-base tunnel system presents identical geometry, lighting, and thematic cues for most of its length, which makes it extremely difficult to recognize whether you are on Eagle side, Cobra side, or anywhere in between. Because the tunnel houses multiple weapons, equipment options, and uninterrupted routes, players can run a flag entirely on foot without ever entering a vehicle or stepping into a distinct landmarked area. This reduces macro path variety and compresses combat into a space that lacks visual differentiation.

Improving readability could take several forms:

Creating a stronger visual bifurcation between sides (organics, color shifts, biome contrast, structural differences).
Adding clear midpoint indicators — CE-style Forerunner arrows, glyphs, directional lighting, or unique framing elements.
Breaking up the tunnel with landmark features that cue progress and help players reset spatial awareness.

These adjustments would resolve the repeated confusion around spawning: many players didn’t know whether to go left or right because both sides looked and played the same.

On the positive side, the sandbox has improved significantly. Replacing the repulsor with a grapple was a smart adjustment to reduce the dominance of Banshee control, and the removal of the base overshields helped simplify early pushes. Rockets, Camo, and other neutrals are now better balanced. The only lingering gameplay clarity issue is the neutral activation terminal between Camo and Rockets. Although it triggers shields at both bases (blocking vehicles and grenades but allowing players to pass), the mechanic still feels unclear and situational. If kept, the activation needs stronger visual communication and immediate, in-view cause-and-effect feedback. Otherwise, a static, always-on shield system may be cleaner.

Art:

The Forerunner art direction is in a strong place. Structural forms, environment dressing, and foliage integration all support the intended atmosphere well. The energy bridges are readable, consistent, and visually communicate lane direction. Artur’s removal of the earlier base shields and unnecessary scripted components has allowed the map’s visual language to breathe more naturally.

Where the art could meaningfully improve is in the tunnel differentiation. Right now the palette, composition, and lighting of the linear interiors are too consistent, making them blur together visually. Introducing biome contrast (rock, grass, foliage pockets), light-temperature variation, or architectural shifts between bases would immediately help solve the map-awareness issue noted in gameplay. The current art foundation is solid — it simply needs more intentional contrast to support multiplayer clarity.

Technical:

Double-Edge has seen major technical improvements during the polish phase, and the work shows. Earlier issues with shield activation systems, scripting inconsistencies, and technical clutter have been cleaned up. The new version is far more stable, readable, and predictable. The effort to attempt scripting in the earlier version deserves credit — ambition should never be penalized — and the current streamlined implementation benefits the map.

That said, a few technical notes remain:

Clunky geometry above the present Camo spawn (where the Energy Sword used to be) causes player feet to snag during traversal; smoothing or replacing this geometry would prevent movement interruptions.
Activation clarity: the neutral switch still lacks immediate visual feedback in-view. Technical pieces that influence gameplay should have an observable effect within the player’s visual frame.
Containment and navigation are otherwise in excellent shape, and performance remains stable across full lobbies.
